Farmers in Bukomansimbi district have lost interest in their maize production to the extent of leaving the dried crop un-harvested from the fields due to low prices that have hit the market.

A kilogram of maize is going for as low as Shillings 200 in some parts of the country, it’s only in Kayunga where a Kilo costs between 300 and 400/=.

Farmers have lost interest in the crop and are leaving the fields unattended to for this August planting season saying the investment made in the last season in terms of buying fertilizers, improved seeds and caring for the farms has left them in losses, given the existent market prices of maize yet maize flour costs 2000/=

Hajji Muhammad Kateregga, the Bukomansimbi District LC V Chairperson, says he is in talks with the Agriculture Ministry to list the area among districts, government is considering buying maize from in relation to the Minister of Agriculture Vincent Ssempijja’s statement before parliament on Tuesday that indicated government’s considerations of buying at least 500,000 tons of maize at 500/= a kilogram.

But Veronica Nanyondo, the Bukomansimbi Woman Member of Parliament and a member on the Parliamentary Committee of Agriculture is afraid that the arrangement will only benefit a small fraction of farmers, which will have minimal impact.
