The Ugandan Media is under continuous pressure especially from public officials and government to silence critical and independent voices, according to the European Union.

This was contained in a joint EU statement delivered by the Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Mogens Pedersen during the World Press Day celebrations by Journalists at Kampala Railway gardens on today.

The World Press Freedom Day celebrations were held under the global theme: ‘keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law.’

Pedersen noted that the increasing pressures exerted on the Media in Uganda is a clear attempt to intimidate the press, which has consequently led to self-censorship by media houses and journalists to avoid arrests.

The Chairperson of Uganda Human Rights Commission, Meddie Ssozi Kaggwa called for the improvement of the legal regime in Uganda by reviewing some laws that are offensive to media freedom.
