The European Union has strongly criticized the Ugandan government for re-arresting the novelist, Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, moments after a court had ordered his release on bail.

His lawyer led by Samuel Wanda said plain-clothed men grabbed the author as soon as he stepped out of Kitalya prison and whisked away in a tinted double-cabin pick up, moments after he was granted bail on Tuesday by Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Douglas Singiza released Kakwenza on a Shs500,000 cash bail and a non cash bail of Shs10m for his sureties.

Kakwenza applied for bail to seek treatment for torture wounds inflicted on him following his arrest on December 28, 2021, from his home in Kisaasi for allegedly using his Twitter handle @KakwenzaRukira to disturb the peace of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his son, Lt General Muhoozi Kainerugaba the Commander Land Forces.

The EU statement described the action as a clear disrespect to the rule of law and called for Rukirabashaija’s immediate release.

In 2020 the author was interrogated over whether his book The Greedy Barbarian was about President Museveni.
