The National Drug Authority-NDA has started phasing out drug shops from Kampala.

In a press Conference at the Uganda Media Center, the Secretary NDA Dona Kusemererwa, said by 2017 there were 478 pharmacies licensed to operate in Kampala and each is expected to serve at least 3,172 going by the current population of the city of 1,516,210 people according to the 2014 Population Census.

However Kusemererwa says under the new policy, all drug shops located close to pharmacies, will be asked to relocate to other areas where there are few pharmacies and at least a drug shop is supposed to be located in a distance of not less than 1.5 kilometers from a Pharmacy.

She adds that to address mismanagement and improve pharmaceutical service delivery, no new drug shops will be licensed to operate in Kampala and other municipalities but will grant licenses for new pharmacies in private hospitals in Kampala.

In 2017, NDA issued licenses to 1,752 pharmacies and over 8,000 drug shops across the country.
