The Parliamentary committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and States Enterprises (COSASE) has summoned the Minister of Public Service, Wilson Muruli Mukasa over his extension of Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) merger to Uganda World Life Authority (UWA).

This was after one of the committee members, Eddie Kwizera, sought clarity from UWEC Executive Director James Musinguzi on the extent of how the center had implemented the rationalization process.

In response ED Musinguzi said that the merger of UWEC to UWA was extended for three more months by Minister Muruli Mukasa starting July to September this year 2024.

However this raised concerns from MPs leading to the chairperson of the committee Medard Lubega Sseggona questioning where Minister Muruli got powers and authority to extend the rationalization of UWEC before consulting parliament.

According to the rationalization bills recently passed on by President Museveni, the process is meant to start on 1st July 2024.

Early this year, Parliament approved the merger of the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

The decision came as part of a broader legislative effort, which also involved amendments to the Uganda Wildlife Authority Act, 2019, to accommodate the merger.

The merger is projected to save the government Shs15.166 billion in the fiscal year 2024/25, with anticipated savings increasing to Shs16.5 billion in 2025/26.
