The Catholic Church is wondering why the Government is slow in implementing the National Environment Management Act 2019.

This has been disclosed by the Executive Director Caritas Uganda, Rev. Fr. Hillary Muhezangango during a stakeholder’s public dialogue ahead of the World Environment Day that is being commemorated on June 5th at Kololo Ceremonial grounds under the theme; “stop plastic pollution now, restore the environment”.

He said that it’s high time the Government and all other stakeholders to ensure that they protect the environment using this Act which prescribes to among others, manufacturers or importers of plastics or plastic products the precondition for continued operation, to ensure recycling as part of their operation, through buying back or removal of plastic waste from the environment, however this hasn’t been implemented.

Fr. Muhezangango also encouraged Ugandans wherever they are to embrace the issue of protecting the environment by fighting plastic usage in the country.

On 8th February 2023, NEMA announced plans to enforce provisions of the National Environment Act, 2019 and various regulations in relation to various offences including developments without Environment and Social Impact Assessment, Failure to conduct Environment Audits among others which have never been implemented since then.
