Caritas Uganda has warned of devastating effects to the country if the rate of environmental destruction is not checked by the authorities.

National Director of Caritas Uganda Msgr. Francis Ndamira says their field findings reveal serious problems caused by human activity citing the whole stretch from parts of Soroti to Moroto and all through to Pokoti land all trees have been cut for firewood and charcoal.

Msgr. Ndamira says such effects fail rains, food production and pastures for animals leading to malnutrition, low income and disease outbreaks among others.

He says Uganda’s environmental challenges can be reversed in a national program with all citizens through sensitization and as Caritas they have committed to environmental protection following Bududa, Kasese and Ntoroko mudslides and are working on a plan to be followed in 2018.

In 2016, President Museveni declared war on environmental degradation, on his tour in Eastern parts of the country where he walked over three kilometers across Mpologoma swamp and bridge along the Mbale-Tirinyi road where he said the country needs to put on new spectacles to address the issue of drought and starvation that had caused death and destruction.

According to reports, drought has plunged East Africa into the worst food security crisis, Africa has faced in 20 years. More than 11.5 million people are currently in need of food aid within the region.
