Innocent Olaraju, the officer in charge of Obuku Police Station in Soroti district is in trouble for knocking dead a pedestrian during clashes between Forum for Democratic Change supporters and Police on Monday.

Olaraju who was riding a police motorcycle knocked Peter Osakan, 66 near Cornerstone Pub in Nakatunya Ward, Soroti Municipality while he was rushing to reinforce police officers at Central Police Station.

According to eyewitnesses, the officer was over speeding when he knocked Osakan. The victim was rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital where he died. This prompted relatives to storm Soroti CPS, demanding for compensation.

Edward Esegu, the LC3 Chairman for Soroti Sub County says the officer agreed with the family to meet the burial expenses first before the discussions for compensation. He said the meeting for compensation has been scheduled for February 1st, 2020, with the family.

Michael Odongo, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman says although the officer has recorded a statement, he is still receiving treatment since he was also injured.

The clashes left more than 12 people injured and traders counting losses. The party president, Patrick Amuriat Oboi and three others were arrested and charged but later released on police bond.
