Government through the Ministry of lands, housing and urban development is coming with a draft aimed at expanding the office of the chief government valuer , its powers and functions .

This has been revealed by the state minister for housing Dr. Chris Baryomunsi in the consultative meeting with the private valuers and surveyors in Kampala saying that once the bill is approved it will provide for regulation, management and supervision of valuation and to provide for related matters.

He notes that the existing law that empowers the office of the chief government valuer doesn’t clearly explain the roles of the chief government valuer and the current laws do not clearly empower the government to compulsory acquire land for development .

Baryomunsi explains that this bill is not eyeing the compulsory taking of peoples land but to harmonise peacefully how government can acquire land after compensating the land owner .

Among the proposals on the functions of the office of the chief government valuer include assessment of compensation for land and properties acquired by government, determining ground rent for leases on government land among others .
