Police in the Albertine region are holding 27 suspects on allegations of burning down houses belonging to people who had been resettled from the Kyangwali refugee settlement land in the newly created Kikuube district.

According toThe Albertine region police spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, the incident that happened around 6pm last evening involved a group allegedly opposed to the resettlement exercise stormed the new resettlement site attacked and burnt five grass thatched houses belonging to those who accepted to be relocated.

The incident happened in Kyeya village, Bukinda parish, Kyangwali sub-county one of the three villages where the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) chose to resettle at least 1780 people who are said to have encroached on the said settlement land.

Government recently secured a seven square mile piece of land in Kasonga parish, Kyangwali Sub County to resettle 1780 people who are said to have encroached on the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement land in Kyangwali Sub County, Kikuube district.

The land covers the villages of Bweizibwera, Kyeya A and B, Katoma, Nyamigisa A and B and Kyakiyoora. Each household received 2.5-acre piece of land and so far 1557 encroachers have been allocated and resettled.
